Mary Cosby is reflecting on the recent challenges that landed her son Robert Jr. behind bars.
During part 2 of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City season 6 reunion on Tuesday, Jan. 20, Mary cried after watching back scenes with her 23-year-old son, who was arrested and put in jail in late 2025 after multiple incidents involving his estranged wife and father-in-law.
When host Andy Cohen asked what was making her emotional while watching the clips, Mary said through tears, "My son."
She explained that Robert Jr.’s latest arrest on Nov. 9 occurred when he went to his now-ex Alexiana Smokoff's home where she lives with her family after “they filed a restraining order against him, and he went back anyway, thinking that she wants him to come back and save her.”
“I don't know where he's getting that from. Delusional,” Mary continued. “And every time he'd go back over there, they would call the police, and they'd arrest him, and this time they tased him.”

Robert Jr. will remain in jail without bail until his sentencing on Feb. 3. He plead guilty to eight charges including assault, criminal trespass, violation of a protective order, violation of a jail release court order and more in November. His plea came one day after Alexiana filed for divorce.
Despite Robert Jr.'s legal trouble, Mary said she’s “happy” and “in a good place."
“I'm not worried about him — I know he's somewhere where he's not using,” she said of her son, who was previously open on RHOSLC about struggling with mental health and drug addiction. (He also pleaded guilty to DUI in 2022.)
“I have to step back so that he can learn, and he can make his own decision," she added. "Unfortunately he's learning the hard way, but I'm okay with it. It’s just, you don’t wanna see your kid suffer, but I know it’s good, and I’d rather him be there than dead.”
Andy then asked if Mary is still in contact with her son, and while she confirmed that she is, she revealed that neither she nor her husband, Robert Jr.'s dad Robert Sr., have been to the facility to visit.
“I can't go to the jail, Andy, that’s a little weird,” she said. “No. I don't want to look at my child behind the glass. He calls me every day, and I'm basically preaching to him. I'm like, ‘You’re going through this, but you have to realize that God is allowing it, and if God allowed it, then it's for your good. This will help you to change, and you’ve got to change.’”
“Robert talked to him the other day, and he wants books, so Robert Sr. is sending him a lot of books,” she added.

Looking ahead, Mary shared that she is hopeful that the experience will be a turning point in Robert Jr.’s future, just as her mom kicking her out of the house at 18 was for her.
“When I got kicked out, I was like, ‘Where am I gonna go?’ And my mom was like, ‘I don't know where you’re going, but you’re not staying here,’" Mary said. "I wasn't obeying the rules. I was one of those children. I had my own life.”
“I hope this all is for his good,” she continued of Robert Jr.’s time in jail. “I feel like it’s designed [to be].”
