The ABC crime drama follows R.J. Decker (Scott Speedman), a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con who reinvents himself as a private investigator in South Florida. As he tackles a series of quirky and dangerous cases, R.J. must also confront his troubled past while relying on an unlikely team that includes his journalist ex and her police detective wife. The series is inspired by Carl Hiaasen’s 1987 novel Double Whammy.

ABC renewed R.J. Decker for season 2 in May 2026, leaving fans eager to see how R.J. navigates the shocking cliffhanger from the season 1 finale.

“It raises the stakes for the character and the show itself,” Speedman told PEOPLE in April 2026 of season 1’s ending. “Again, the balance between the light and the darkness of our show, that’s really going to put R.J. ... He’s going to be one of the number one suspects, and that whole group is going to be put into the spotlight.”

The season 1 finale saw R.J. finally uncover the truth behind the incident that sent him to prison. With help from Emi Ochoa (Jaina Lee Ortiz), his ex-wife, Catherine Delacroix (Adelaide Clemens), her wife Mel Abreu (Bevin Bru) and his former cellmate Wish Aiken (Kevin Rankin), R.J. discovered that Emi’s corrupt father, Victor Ochoa (David Zayas), had ordered his son Lucas (Maximo Salas) to steal R.J.’s camera because it contained evidence tied to a murder.

The group uncovered an incriminating flash drive hidden in Victor’s safe, exposing his role in covering up a deadly conspiracy involving a construction project. The evidence ultimately led to Victor’s arrest and cleared R.J. of the crimes that had haunted him throughout the season.

But the victory was short-lived. After R.J. and his friends celebrated at Wish’s bar, Victor was found floating face down in his swimming pool, murdered by an unknown killer. The shocking cliffhanger not only left the identity of Victor’s killer a mystery but also positioned R.J. and those closest to him as potential suspects heading into season 2.

While ABC has not released an official synopsis for season 2, the new episodes are expected to pick up in the aftermath of Victor’s shocking murder.

Showrunner Rob Doherty has confirmed that the mystery surrounding Victor’s killer will be the driving force of the season. Because R.J., Emi and the rest of their inner circle worked together to expose Victor’s corruption, they’ll all find themselves under suspicion as investigators search for the truth.

“Who was Victor in bed with, and could they have done him in?” Doherty told TV Insider in April 2026, teasing that the investigation will delve into the corrupt politician’s ties to shady people from his past.

The murder will also complicate R.J. and Emi’s budding romance. Doherty said Emi will struggle with guilt after helping bring down her father, believing that his arrest left him vulnerable to his killer.

“I think that will make it harder to be around RJ, at least in the short term,” Doherty told the outlet. “Not because she blames him, but because it’s hard to look at RJ and not sort of be reminded of the path that ultimately led to her dad getting gunned down in his home.”

Which cast members are returning for R.J. Decker season 2?

ABC has not officially confirmed the season 2 cast, but all five main cast members are expected to return.

Speedman is set to reprise his role as R.J. Decker, alongside Ortiz as Emilia “Emi” Ochoa, Rankin as Wish Aiken, Clemens as R.J.’s ex-wife Catherine Delacroix and Bru as Detective Melody “Mel” Abreu.

One actor who is less likely to return in a present-day capacity is Zayas, whose character, Victor Ochoa, was murdered in the season 1 finale.
