Crown Prince Haakon also cut an official visit to Japan short in order to return home amid Mette-Marit's poor health

Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway will soon return home from school in Australia amid the worsening health of her mother, Crown Princess Mette-Marit.
Crown Prince Haakon, 52, announced the news about his daughter during a press conference in Japan, where he was on an official visit this week, according to Norwegian broadcaster NRK.
In an English translation, NRK's reporting said that Ingrid Alexandra, 22, "plans to come home soon. It has to do with the family situation. She wants to be with her mother."
Plans are for the princess to eventually return to Australia, where she is in the midst of a three-year bachelor's degree with a focus on international relations and political economy at the University of Sydney. However, the Crown Prince said that it's currently unknown how long she will stay home.
The Norwegian palace announced on May 29 that the Crown Prince's Japan trip was being cut short by a day, also due to Crown Princess Mette-Marit's "health situation."

After the Royal House of Norway said in March that Crown Princess Mette-Marit's health had "deteriorated," Crown Prince Haakon gave a health update last week on Mette-Marit, 52, who was diagnosed with chronic pulmonary fibrosis in 2018.
“The Crown Princess is seriously ill, and I think she has gotten a bit worse lately," he said, according to NRK. "So I am worried about her health."

"These six months have gone pretty well, I think. But there are different phases. So we just have to try to solve it as best we can," the prince added.
During several recent public appearances, Crown Princess Mette-Marit has been photographed wearing a nasal cannula, or oxygen breathing tube. When asked if she would be put on a lung transplant list, Crown Prince Haakon said it was a question for her doctors.
"It's a medical question. So they’re the ones who decide when it should happen, when it’s right," he noted. "But I think she’s gotten a lot worse lately, unfortunately.”

Crown Princess Mette-Marit isn't the only member of the Norwegian royal family facing serious health issues recently.
Last week, on May 27, Crown Prince Haakon's mother, Queen Sonja, 88, was admitted to the hospital for "atrial fibrillation and heart failure." The palace announced that the Queen would be on sick leave for a week and needed "rest and adjustment of her medication." The Queen previously had a pacemaker installed in January 2025.

The Queen's husband, King Harald, 89, has also faced multiple health issues in recent years. He endured a leg operation in 2022, COVID diagnoses in 2022 and 2023 and pacemaker surgery in 2024. Most recently, in February 2026, the King was hospitalized for infection and dehydration while on a family vacation in Tenerife.
