Prince Harry and six other celebrities may be required to pay millions in legal costs after losing their lawsuit against ANL earlier this month. A follow-up hearing reportedly discussed the amount they could be liable to pay. The loss came amid Prince Harry’s visit to the UK with Meghan Markle and their children for an emotional reunion with King Charles.

Prince Harry, Elton John and others could pay $45M in Daily Mail case, claims report

According to reports, Prince Harry and six high-profile figures, including Elton John, Elizabeth Hurley, and Sadie Frost, may have to cover the legal costs for the opposing party. This comes after it was known that they had lost the lawsuit, filed in 2022, against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL).

At the time, Justice Matthew Nicklin ruled that the claimants failed to establish that the publisher was involved in unlawful information gathering. The lawsuit alleged that the outlet illegally obtained information and published stories about them.

Reuters reported that ANL’s lawyer, Antony White, said that the other party should pay on an “indemnity basis.” By this, he meant that their opposition has to pay all their legal bills, even if those expenses are unreasonably high. Further, in the argument, he also pointed out that serious “egregious” allegations were made against them without any concrete evidence that cost them an additional amount in the case.

The court learned that ANL’s total legal bill is around £34.5 million, but Prince Harry’s and other claimants’ case is insured only for £16 million. According to the outlet, ANL allegedly seeks an early payment of £10 million.

On the contrary, the lawyer of the claimants, Nicholas Bacon, argued that their opposition’s stated legal amount is extremely high and clearly exceeds the budget. By this, he meant that the budget set aside by their client wouldn’t be enough to cover the legal costs stated by ANL. He further alleged that ANL wanted to “go for the jugular” as they wanted to punish the claimants for bringing the case into court. The hearing will continue on Thursday.
