R&B star Peabo Bryson has suffered a stroke

Per a statement obtained by Variety on Sunday, May 31, he is "currently under medical care"

Bryson is a two-time Grammy-winning artist

R&B singer Peabo Bryson has suffered a stroke and is undergoing treatment.

“Two-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and balladeer, Peabo Bryson — the voice behind the Oscar-winning Disney songs ‘Beauty and the Beast' and ‘A Whole New World' — has suffered a stroke and is currently under medical care," a rep shared in a statement with Variety on Sunday, May 31.

The statement continued: "At this time, the family requests privacy as they navigate this deeply personal moment together. The thoughts, prayers and love of friends and fans are welcomed and deeply appreciated."

Bryson, 75, is best known for his duets on Disney's Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin soundtracks.

In 1992, the South Carolina native's performance of “Beauty and the Beast” with Céline Dion earned him a Grammy win, as did his rendition of “A Whole New World” with Regina Belle just a year later.

Both songs ended up taking home Best Original Song at the Academy Awards.

Bryson also released several solo hits in the ‘70s, ‘80s and early ‘90s, including “If Ever You're in My Arms Again” and “Can You Stop the Rain.”

He's also known for collaborating with Roberta Flack on "Tonight, I Celebrate My Love," "You're Looking Like Love to Me" and "As Long as There's Christmas."

In 2019, Bryson was hospitalized after suffering a "mild" heart attack.

At the time, his rep confirmed to PEOPLE that he was hospitalized in stable condition and was “awake and responsive.”

The rep added that “both his medical team and family are optimistic for a speedy recovery” and requested privacy for the family.

In August 2025, Bryson announced the Golden Touch Tour, which celebrates his 50-year music career and is set to continue into 2026, per Broadway World.

It was also revealed at the time that a new album titled Grace, produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and a career-spanning companion book were slated for release.

His most recent album Stand for Love came out in 2018.
