Olivia Rodrigo knows that sometimes the most meaningful songs arrive when you least expect them.
The singer-songwriter, 23, made a surprise appearance at the Licorice Pizza pop-up to celebrate the upcoming Aug. 1 release of LEGO sets inspired by her new album and music. During a Q&A with fans, Rodrigo opened up about one of her favorite songwriting experiences. It involved a track that came together so quickly and naturally that hearing it back brought her to tears.
When a fan asked Rodrigo which song had the most memorable writing process, she immediately pointed to “Honeybee.”
“I feel like writing ‘Honeybee’ was really fun and it happened in a really short amount of time,” she said. “It’s always fun when a song just comes out.”

For Rodrigo, the song stood out because it captured exactly what she was feeling in the moment.
“I remember listening to it after and having tears in my eyes because it just so perfectly captured the way I felt,” Rodrigo said. “So yeah, definitely that one.”
The emotional track appears on Rodrigo’s third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, which was released on June 12. The 13-track record tells the story of the life cycle of her first true adult relationship, exploring everything from the excitement of the honeymoon phase to the uncertainty, self-doubt and heartbreak that follows.

Beyond individual songs, Rodrigo says creativity has shaped the way she sees the world. For her, inspiration can come from even the smallest everyday moments.
“I just love being able to express the weirdness that goes on in my brain and it definitely affects how you see the world,” she said. “I think when you start writing or creating, you kind of see things through the lens of a creator.”

That creative mindset means she’s always collecting ideas for future songs. She added that she keeps a running list of ideas ready for whenever inspiration strikes.
“So you’ll just be walking on the street and see something that can be sort of meaningless, but to you, it really matters,” Rodrigo said. “I have a crazy running list of things in my notes app that I want to write songs about.”

Rodrigo also reflected on how growing up as an only child influenced her songwriting style, explaining that having time alone helped her develop a creative outlet from a young age.
“Honestly, being an only child does contribute a lot to songwriting,” she said. “I was alone so much growing up that I had to have all these feelings and have a way to get them out in the privacy of my own room.”
Now, she finds inspiration through the people around her and the stories they share.
“People are so inspiring to me,” Rodrigo said. “I just love meeting new people and hearing about their stories and having relationships that conjure up different emotions. I’m a people person, for sure.”
As she prepares to bring the new music to fans, Rodrigo also teased which song she is especially excited to perform live.
“I’m really excited to do ‘The Cure‘ live,” she said. “I have something special for that.”
Rodrigo will kick off her The Unraveled Tour on Sept. 25, in Hartford, Conn., at PeoplesBank Arena.
