Kate Hudson is confirming speculation about one role she turned down, years ago
Hudson said she turned down the part in order to work on another film, alongside Heath Ledger
Asked if she regretted turning down the role, Hudson said, "When people say these things, it doesn’t feel good to talk about it"
Kate Hudson' is opening up about her decision to turn down the role of Mary Jane in 2002's Spider-Man — a role that later went to Kirsten Dunst.
Speaking on the Monday, Dec. 22, 2025 episode Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, 46-year-old Hudson was asked if it was true that she turned down the role.
Asked if she regretted the decision, Hudson said, “You know, it’s so funny. When people say these things, it doesn’t feel good to talk about it, because the people who are in the movie are the right people, and your circumstances in life happen the way they happen. But yes, I did."
She continued: “And now that I look back, it’s one of those things where I’m like, ‘You know, that would’ve been nice to be in the Spider-Man movie.’”
As Cohen noted, the role ultimately lead to more than one Spider-Man movie, as Dunst starred opposite Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker's love interest in director Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007).

Her decision, she said, came down to wanting to appear in a different film: Four Feathers, opposite the late Heath Ledger.
“But at the same time, I did a movie called Four Feathers," Hudson said. "I got to meet Heath Ledger who became a very good friend, and I got an experience that I would have never had. So, part of me is like, ‘Life happens exactly the way it’s supposed to,’ and so I’m grateful for it. But I do look at that [and] I’m like, ‘Aw, it would’ve been fun to be her.’”
In a 2021 interview with Variety, Dunst said she would be open to reprising her role as MJ, saying. "I would do it. Why not? That would be fun."
"I would never say no to something like that," Dunst added, before joking: "I'd be old MJ at this point with little Spidey babies."
Hudson, meanwhile, will soon star in the film Song Sung Blue alongside Hugh Jackman, who recently said the actress deserves an Academy Award for the role.
"Kate Hudson is not only one of the great stars of our business, she is a consummate actor," Jackman said onstage next to Hudson at The Gotham Awards' 35th annual awards ceremony at New York City's Cipriani Wall Street on Dec. 1. "I believe this time she is going to get an Oscar."
