John Cena Got AEW Veteran A Major WrestleMania Payday When WWE Had No Plans For Him

John Cena once helped an AEW veteran secure a WWE WrestleMania match. Paul Wight recently revealed the story behind that decision. Wight said Cena completely changed his plans. Before that, WWE had nothing planned for WrestleMania.
John Cena, Edge, and Big Show faced each other at WWE WrestleMania 25. Cena won after delivering his iconic double Attitude Adjustment. He lifted both Edge and Big Show at once.
Speaking on Planet Tyrus, Wight was asked how Cena pulled off the famous spot. Wight first praised Cena’s incredible strength and balance. He said, “John’s a tremendous athlete. I’ve seen he’s a whole another level. John’s one of the strongest guys… I’ve been on a lot of guys’ shoulders in my career, and John’s the most stable. Like John Cena, Mark Henry, it’s a whole different level working with them.”
Wight then shared how the WrestleMania match came together. At the time, he had no creative plans at all. He recalled, “I made a joke with John… ‘Hey, man. I don’t know if you know, I’m good at taking finishes.’ which obviously he knew because I worked with him at WrestleMania 20… I wasn’t doing much then. There wasn’t anything written for me.”

According to Wight, Cena approached him later that same night. He already had an idea for WrestleMania 25. Wight said, “He told me, ‘I got you in WrestleMania. We’re going to make it a triple threat, me, you, and Edge.'”

Instead of missing WrestleMania 25, he landed a featured match. He explained, “I went from having no match at WrestleMania to now having a really good payday at WrestleMania and a top angle with our top babyface and our other top babyface heel at the time, Edge, or Adam, and I’m super like, holy wow.”
Wight also revealed Cena never forgot their WrestleMania 20 match. “I mean, and then he said, ‘Thank you for putting me over at WrestleMania.’ Cena did have one request before the match happened. Wight needed to hit a specific weight before WrestleMania.
“The only condition was… I had to be down to 443 lbs, ’cause John had done the math for his squats… I remember the day of, I said, ‘We’re good. I’m at 441. Numbers are good. I don’t plan on eating today, so we should be good.’ And that was it. We rocked and rolled and had fun.”
