In a recent interview, June Diane Raphael was asked about her former Grace and Frankie costars, Hollywood legends Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
The Elle actress recalled their frequent use of the voice-to-text feature on their cell phones.
“My makeup artist of 30 years is dead. Period. Send.”
If you ever get a text from Jane Fonda or Lily Tomlin, they probably wrote it aloud.
In a recent interview on the Daily Beast’s Obsessed podcast, June Diane Raphael — who played Fonda’s daughter and Tomlin’s stepdaughter on Grace and Frankie for seven seasons — opened up about acting alongside the Hollywood legends. She even revealed the cell phone feature to which both actresses seemed to have an addiction.

Raphael noted that she didn’t think she’d “ever shared” this factoid about her former onscreen parental figures.
“One of the things that I loved is how much they used voice-to-text on their cell phones. Both of them,” Raphael divulged. “Both of them would ... just fully deliver — full voice.”
The Elle star recited examples. “‘Tell Audrey that I can’t make it on Wednesday. Period.’ Full paragraphs. ‘If you want to ask her if she can reschedule to Thursday, I am open to that. Period.'”

And we’re not just talking simple notes... we are talking all messages.

“Sometimes it was like ... ‘My makeup artist of 30 years is dead. Period. Send,’” Raphael related.
But the Weapons actress said that she believes the Klute Oscar winner and Nashville Oscar nominee have more than earned the right to speak all of their texts aloud, because “legends ... shouldn’t be typing on this little screen.” Although sometimes, the pair's vocal dictation would cross wires.
“And sometimes the two of them would be talking, doing that at the same time in the chairs next to each other, and then one of their voices was going into that one, and then they would yell at each other,” Raphael recalled. “It was just like absolutely delightful.”
Grace and Frankie ran on Netflix from 2015 to 2022, featuring Fonda (Grace) and Tomlin (Frankie) as divorcees who end up living together after their husbands, played by Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston respectively, leave them for each other. Grace and Frankie’s children, including Raphael’s Brianna round out the cast.

Raphael also heaped praise on Fonda and Tomlin, noting that she admired “who they are in the world,” specifying “what they’ve risked of themselves, what Jane has risked of herself personally, professionally... just spends her privilege literally every second of every day to create a better world for the future and our children.”
