Clint Eastwood took his filmography to another level when he made his directorial debut with Play Misty for Me.

Eastwood turns 96, just four years shy of hitting 100, on May 31. The legendary filmmaker made his breakout role playing Rowdy Yates in the hit CBS television western Rawhide in 1959. Westerns soon became his niche after he nailed the Man with No Name role in Sergio Leone's spaghetti western trilogy, starting with A Fistful of Dollars in 1964. The Hollywood star became a leading man in the title role of the renegade cop, Dirty Harry, in 1971.

That same year, Eastwood wanted to do more than act; he wanted to write, direct, produce, and compose music. This comes after the actor-turned-director shared the one movie he "failed in" at in his iconic career.

Released on October 21, 1971, Play Misty for Me follows popular disc jockey Dave Garver (Eastwood), who becomes restless in his relationship with his girlfriend, Tobie (Donna Mills). Impulsively, he goes out and sleeps with a random woman, Evelyn Draper (Jessica Walter), whom he meets at a nightclub. It doesn't take long for Evelyn to start showing off her obsessive behavior and volatile personality, which threatens Dave.

The psychological thriller took place before Fatal Attraction, which shares a similar plot, hit theaters in 1987. The '70s thriller is a predecessor to the obsessed stalker genre, which includes Fear and Misery. Eastwood's direction relies more on suspense and dread, as Evelyn repeatedly asks him to play the jazz track "Misty" by pianist Erroll Garner.

In the final confrontation, Tobie is gagged and bound at Dave's home. At the peak of her madness, Evelyn attacks Dave with her knife, slashing him multiple times. Dave punches Evelyn, knocking her off the balcony and straight to her death on the rocky shore below.

In the 1999 book, Clint Eastwood: Interviews, the iconic director explained why he chose Play Misty for Me for his debut. He said, "After 17 years of bouncing my head against the wall, hanging around sets, maybe influencing certain camera setups with my own opinions, watching actors go through all kinds of hell without any help, and working with both good directors and bad ones, I'm at the point where I'm ready to make my own pictures.

"I stored away all the mistakes I made and saved up all the good things I learned, and now I know enough to control my own projects and get what I want out of actors. So I directed this picture, and I'm editing it myself, and I think it's damn good," Eastwood closed.

Play Misty for Me has an 85 percent score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

One critic said, "Misty is a very good thriller, showing that Eastwood had absorbed a great deal from the directors he'd worked for."

Another critic added, "Play Misty for Me is a cautionary tale for those who casually choose their lovers; it's a screeching shock to the system."

A third wrote, "Eastwood and Walter play off each other quite well; he is understated without being dull, while she chews just enough scenery to create a genuine sense of unhinged malice without becoming a cartoon."
