How Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford’s kids addressed their parents being exes to form a bond on “Shards” set

Homer Gere says he and Kaia Gerber had to clear the air about their parents on The Shards set.

Gere’s father, Richard Gere, and Gerber’s mother, Cindy Crawford, dated for a number of years before getting married in 1991, and divorced in 1995.

During the cast’s first meetup, Homer told USA Today that “me or her were like, ‘Should we address the elephant in the room?’”

The Shardsdoesn’t just feature two nepo babies, but two members of a near-nepo dynasty.

Homer Gere, the son of Richard Gere and Carey Lowell, and Kaia Gerber, the daughter of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, play core members of the upcoming serial killer thriller’s ensemble. Two rising progeny of big names sharing space on a call sheet would be surreal enough, but the series that small screen impresario Ryan Murphy adapted from the novel by Bret Easton Ellis goes one step further.

Richard and Cindy used to date and were even married from the late 1980’s through the early ’90s. On Tuesday, Homer looked back on how he and Kaia broke the ice when first meeting up as a cast.

“It’s really funny, the odds are funny,” Homer told USA Today on Monday, on the red carpet for The Shards’ world premiere in New York City.

“We had never met, actually, before shooting. We met two weeks before at a bar, with all the cast and it was our first kind of like, let’s meet each other, and she was lovely,” the 26-year-old explained. “Immediately, I think me or her were like, should we address the elephant in the room?”

Homer recounted that one of the two came out with the ancestral overlap on the front of everyone’s mind, which was “incredibly normal from the inside. She’s a lovely actress and person and we’ve gotten really close. So it’s been really a pleasure to work with her.”

The Shards follows a group of L.A. prep school students in 1981 who must navigate a new friendship with a mysterious newcomer while dodging a vicious serial killer named The Trawler.

The series misses the Gere-Crawford marriage by about a decade, as the pair made it official in 1991 after years of dating, and divorced in 1995.

“I was just excited to meet him, honestly. And my mom’s coming tonight,” Gerber joked at the premiere, calling the casting “such a small world.”
