The world's first and only trillionaire, Elon Musk, has people saying he 'crashed out' during a recent interview, as he responded to accusations of people 'loathing' him and quickly turned the question around.
In an interview with The Economist's editor-in-chief, Zanny Minton Beddoes, the tech entrepreneur talked about everything from racism, mentioning his mixed-race kids with partner Shivon Zilis as proof he is not racist, the possibility of a civil war in the UK due to immigration, and the behind the scenes of working with President Trump, running the unofficial Department of Government Efficiency.
However, it was when Beddoes goes on to ask about his overall reputation that things went sour. “I mean some people do loathe you,” Beddoes said, to which Musk agreed and claimed he didn’t care. “But do you understand why? Do you think what you’re doing is helpful for Western democracy?”

According to figures by Washington Post from 2025, A mere 4% of Democrats said they approve of Musk's work, precisely the same as Trump's approval in this group. Just 32% of independents said they approve. These compare with a 73% approval rating for Musk among Republicans, trailing Trump's 83%.
However, instead of answering the question directly, Musk went on to rave about his large X/Twitter following of 241 million user actually means that people liked him. He then went on to twist the question to focus on the interviewer's popularity.
Musk said: “Maybe some people do loathe me and that’s probably true. I don’t care. Erm, but the fact that, er, as you pointed out, a quarter billion people follow me, is that I think a lot more people actually like me than don’t.”
He continued: “And I think a lot more people hate you, and the media, more than you realise. Do you realise the media is despised? Do you realise that journalists … the view of journalists is, like, a favourable view of journalists is like 15 per cent.

“The shoe is on the other foot. They hate you. They hate you far more than they hate me.”
People soon shared their thoughts about the 'crash out' as many viewers went on to say it seems that the journalist had brought up a sensitive topic.
"Absolute crash out from Musk after he’s presented with the reality that many, many people f***** hate him," one person wrote while sharing the video.
"It’s pretty cool how it’s abundantly clear that the richest man on earth is living in a hell in his own mind and every day is a new torture for him,” a second person said.
"Elon Musk is not a genius and has the emotional capacity of a toddler.
Meanwhile, some went on to praise Musk for standing up for himself, with one person saying: "You have got to love Elon's brutal honestly."
"BOOM! ELON does not back down. He's right!" another user wrote.
