The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were presented with a miniature "Glasgow cone" during a visit to Team England House at The Social Hub today, August 1, marking day nine of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Prince Edward and Sophie visited the venue as part of their official schedule of engagements in the host city.

The presentation of the cone alludes to a well-known local tradition involving the equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington in Glasgow's Royal Exchange Square, which is routinely topped with an orange traffic cone by members of the public.

Team England officials presented the item to the royal couple during their tour of the temporary facility.

The Social Hub is currently serving as a designated base for English athletes, support staff, and sporting officials for the duration of the international competition.

Team England House provides a centralised location for athletes to rest, meet with media, and interact with visiting dignitaries.

The daytime engagement follows the duke and duchess’s attendance at the boxing competition on Friday evening.

The couple observed the matches at the SEC Centre, which is operating as one of the primary existing venues utilised for this iteration of the Games.

The SEC Centre is hosting multiple indoor sports as part of Glasgow's condensed 10-sport program, an arrangement implemented after the city stepped in to host following the withdrawal of the Australian state of Victoria.

The royal delegation at the Games will increase later today, as the Prince and Princess of Wales are scheduled to arrive in Glasgow.

Prince William and Catherine are expected to attend various sporting sessions, marking their first official appearance at the 2026 event.

The simultaneous attendance of the Waleses and the Edinburghs at the Commonwealth Games follows a precedent established at previous competitions, most notably the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

During the Birmingham Games, the two households attended several events in a united capacity.

On August 2, 2022, Prince William, Catherine, and Princess Charlotte joined Prince Edward, Sophie, Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, and James, Earl of Wessex, at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

The two families sat together in the spectator stands to watch the morning swimming heats.

In addition to the aquatics events, members of both families were present at the gymnastics competitions held at Arena Birmingham, as well as the hockey tournament hosted at the University of Birmingham.

Prior to this, Prince William and Catherine also attended the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which were similarly held in Glasgow, where they watched gymnastics, boxing, and swimming events.

Prince Edward holds the position of Vice-Patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation, a role he took on in 1990, and he regularly attends the Games in an official capacity alongside the duchess.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will conclude tomorrow, August 2.
