Four days after the Affleck family announced that their matriarch, Chris Affleck, had died a month prior, her cause of death has been revealed.
A death certificate obtained by Us Weekly reports that the mother of Ben and Casey Affleck died from cardiopulmonary arrest, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
The Affleck family announced Chris’ death in their hometown newspaper, the Boston Globe, earlier this month.
A cause of death for Chris Affleck, the mother of Oscar-winning actors Casey and Ben Affleck, has been revealed days after the famous family announced that the matriarch had died at age 83.
Chris, whose full name was Christopher Anne Affleck, died from cardiopulmonary arrest while “visiting her son’s residence” on June 2, according to the certificate obtained by Us Weekly on Tuesday. The outlet reported that the certificate also listed pancreatic adenocarcinoma, which she had for months, among other conditions leading to her death.
No autopsy was performed, the outlet added.

Chris’ death was announced via an obituary published in the Boston Globeon July 24. The Affleck family shared that she had been given “six months to live in December of 2025,” before she died in June.
In the obituary, the family shared that Chris worked as a schoolteacher for almost four decades, but that her “favorite young people” were her sons, actors Ben and Casey, in addition to her five grandchildren, Indiana, Violet, Atticus, Fin, and Sam.
The obituary called her grandchildren “the animating force of her last two decades,” and said that she “was suitably proud of her descendants’ achievements, but she was delighted when they questioned, defied, or cleverly engaged authority.”
The obituary also revealed that Chris’ “greatest wish after her diagnosis, however, was to live to see her grandson graduate high school. She did so, attending with her family on May 31, 2026,” noting that she “died peacefully, in her sleep, two days later.”

In addition to raising Ben and Casey, the Academy Award-winning actors, “Chris taught literacy classes in Mississippi during Freedom Summer, marched against the Vietnam War, and reveled in 1960s counterculture,” the obituary read.
“After volunteering on the Obama campaign trail, she traveled to Palestine/Israel, in 2009, and returned home as an organizer with the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine,” it continued. “In her beloved Truro, she was a founding board member of the Sustainable Cape project. When her granddaughter’s student activist group needed a space for trainings, she invited them to Truro and attended every single workshop herself, taking notes.”
Ben and Chris have famously been close to their mother; Chris attended the 1998 Oscars alongside her son, Ben, and his longtime creative partner, Matt Damon, and his mom.
After the pair won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for their 1997 film Good Will Hunting, Ben leaned over and embraced his mother during the emotional moment.
In their acceptance speech, Ben praised the duo’s mothers, telling the audience he wanted to thank his “mother, and Matt’s mother, the most beautiful women here.”
