King Felipe of Spain witnessed a flag mishap during an Armed Forces Day event

The monarch looked surprised as the national flag fell to the ground, reportedly due to a snapped hook

Royal heir Princess Leonor joined her parents for the first time at the event

King Felipe of Spain held his composure despite a flag mishap at Armed Forces Day.

Members of the Spanish royal family stepped out in Vigo, Spain, for a ceremony and parade marking Armed Forces Day on Saturday, May 30. King Felipe was joined by his wife, Queen Letizia, and their eldest daughter and his heir, Princess Leonor.

At one point during the event, a Spanish flag was being raised as a band played music and King Felipe, 58, and Princess Leonor, 20, stood with their arms raised in salute. However, the flag suddenly fell, landing on soldiers standing nearby.

Footage of the moment, shared online, showed King Felipe looking surprised as the flag fell, following it down with his eyes. However, he held his salute as the flag was quickly picked up.

The flag fell after a hook on the flagpole snapped, according to The Olive Press, an English-language news outlet in Spain.

In addition to the flag mishap, other parts of the Armed Forces Day festivities did not go as planned. Hola!reported that organizers canceled a parachute jump and part of the planned aerial display for the event due to strong winds and cloud cover.

In April, another flag mishap involving a royal family played out during King Charles and Queen Camilla's stop at Arlington National Cemetery during their visit to the United States. The royal couple laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to honor the fallen and the military partnership, but the Union Jack flag flown in the King and Queen's procession was flown upside down.

Britain's Flag Institute explains that to fly the Union Jack in the proper position, "in the half of the flag nearest the flagpole, the wider diagonal white stripe must be above the red diagonal stripe, as Scotland's St. Andrew's Cross takes precedence over Ireland's St. Patrick's Cross."

"It is most improper to fly the flag upside down," the institute says.

The U.K.'s national flag unites the heraldic crosses of the kingdoms of England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland, though only Northern Ireland has been part of the U.K. since 1921.

As monarch, King Felipe is the supreme commander of the Spanish Armed Forces, and he joined the Spanish Army in 1985 before completing military training in the Spanish Navy and Spanish Air Force. However, his role is symbolic, with operational control under the Ministry of Defense and the prime minister.

Princess Leonor made her Armed Forces Day debut alongside her parents at the weekend event, sporting a uniform. The royal heir joined the General Military Academy in 2023 to start her military education, preparing her for her future role as monarch and supreme commander of Spain's armed forces.

Princess Leonor will be Spain’s first ruling queen since Queen Isabella II (who reigned from 1833 to 1868) when she accedes to the throne someday.

Speaking about the significance of Princess Leonor’s military training when the plans were announced, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles said, “It’s an essential step in the life of Her Royal Highness … toward the leadership of our country,” CNN reported.
